January 2026
Even when an animal has had a good long life, and it’s clear that it’s time, it’s always hard to say goodbye.
I adopted Oscar in 2013, from CARES in Langley. He was 5 or 6 at the time, and his backstory was a mystery. They had got him from a rescue in Merritt, he was missing a claw and some teeth, and had a scar across the bridge of his nose. They called him Scar, but that seemed too Lion King for me. The name Oscar suited him, because he could be a bit grouchy at times, especially with cat siblings.
Oscar came into my life at a tough time. I had recently been separated, and not long before that, had had to put down another cat (Molly) at the age of 17. I spent a lot of time checking out cats at various sites, but held off until Spring Break so we’d have bonding time. I had a few cats in mind when I visted the shelter, but they showed me Oscar first. He jumped on my lap right away and started playing with the drawstrings on my hoodie, and that sealed the deal.
Although he could be a bit of a jerk to other cats Oscar was friendly, loving, and cuddly, with a loud rumbling purr. He was the best boy, and I feel lucky to have had almost 13 years together. Rest now and be free, little buddy.
Thank you to Lifting Stars for your compassionate care, allowing us to say goodbye in Oscar’s home.
